Power to the ‘Breadcrumb navigation’, although….

April 23rd, 2007 by Jaap Kooiker

A while ago Jakob Nielsen has posted a new Alertbox about Breadcrumb Navigation (again).
He pointed out the importance of breadcrumb navigation. On this point agree with him, altough I don’t always agree with his ideas about the web and : Breadcrumbs don’t hurt. So we should use them as much as we can, but don’t overuse or misplace them.
I know Nielsen doesn’t want to…:), but the web is changing, rapidly. My (and many others) average days of work is building Rich Internet Applications wich are more like desktop applications than plain (HTML) websites therefore most definitly shouldn’t need breadcrumbs, because of the different approach of interface design. It’s all about how the interface is setup and what the purpose of the (web)-application is. I hope webpages become more application-like, simple, functional and efficiĆ«nt, but very most creative and we don’t need breadcrumbs anymore!
